HOW TO DESCRIBE NORA, AKA ‘DESIGN OUTFIT’?
Determined, Roman, architect, design blogger, mother, and also traveller and photographer. A long list of adjectives is not enough to describe Nora Santonastaso, creator of the Design Outfit universe that has brought a hurricane of ideas, questions, smiles and joy to our showroom in Milan.
Her creativity blossoms on every page of her blog, where she describes herself with a compelling timeline, but always leaves us with the feeling that she has only given us a glimpse of the world around her.
Being an architect makes her proud and full of life, but she has decided to do more: to dress the houses whose projects she follows, in a tailor-made manner like a dress sewn onto the skin of the wearer.
Since 2013, Design Outfit has been filled with stories and words, successes and victories, tales and discoveries, and Nora has been joined by other collaborators who help her weave millions more threads.
We had the good fortune to meet her and have a wonderful chat, and after choosing her Freya from the contrasting but equally perfectly matched body/fabric match, she replied as follows:
WHERE WILL YOU USE YOUR NEW FREYA?
I posti in cui Freya starebbe bene sono il mio studio (aperto dalla fine di ottobre 2021) e la casa in cui viviamo, che abbiamo appena terminato di ristrutturare. Penso che starà benissimo nella cameretta dei bambini!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTIC THAT LEADS YOU TO CHOOSE A CHAIR WHEN DESIGNING A SPACE?
From the point of view of form, I define myself as a functionalist, so I think it is necessary for it to be comfortable, especially in function of its purpose; as I am very attentive to the colour and material aspects, I believe that the chair can potentially be a totally different element from the rest of the space or absolutely in harmony, but if one decides to lean towards contrast, it would be better to be given by one chair, in my opinion!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST VISIBLE TREND CHANGE WHEN DESIGNING A PLACE, AN ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC OR PRIVATE?
In this period, there is no doubt that the focus is on material, which includes recycling issues above all. This research, until a few years ago, was only seen in the Nordic countries, particularly in Holland, while I was pleasantly surprised to see it also in our country this year; in particular, I noticed a specific care in the treatment of the product at the end of its life.
DESCRIBE SUPERSALONE 2021 IN ONE WORD (ARCHITECTURE OR DESIGN RELATED, IF YOU WISH)?
The words that immediately come to mind are material and less finished product. I could see a lot of experimentation on aspects and processes that anticipate the design of the product, such as research on fabrics and the combination of different materials, perhaps because the product was so available during the lockdown period. It was indeed possible to buy goods online, but without really seeing the production process of what I was putting in my shopping cart, whereas now that we can see the various processes live again I want to examine them with my own eyes, and realise that what I am buying can be made from quality materials. Also, a lot of preliminary research is often done in academia to produce and I think it is only fair to give them space and credit.
